New worksheet: Chords in Phrygian mode

A new worksheet is available to help you teach your student the Phrygian mode. The worksheet requires the student to figure out diatonic triads and seventh chords on different degrees of the Phrygian mode. This exercise is a great way to understand the mode and it will help the student use the mode in their improvisation. Using this worksheet in combination with SCA-06, a guitar lesson plan on Phrygian, is the best way to teach your student about the mode.

Access the worksheet here: WMO-03 Chords in Phrygian Mode

There are more worksheets on the other modes as well as guitar lesson plans in the Lesson Materials Section.

WMO-03 Chords in Phrygian Mode

About this worksheet

This worksheet will teach your student how to figure out what chords fit within the Phrygian mode. They will learn how to harmonize each scale degree using both diatonic triads as well as seventh chords. Having this understanding of the Phrygian mode will help your student use the mode in their improvising later on. If the student understands the intervals and chords used in the mode they will find it easier to apply the mode.

It's recommended you give your student an in-depth lesson on Phrygian before giving this worksheet. SCA-06 provides a handy reference sheet on the Phrygian mode and is a good starting point.

This worksheet will help your student:

  • Understand the Phrygian mode
  • Learn to harmonize the mode
  • Understand the chords used in the mode
  • Figure out diatonic triads and seventh chords

As Phrygian is the third mode, it's worth teaching your student about Ionian and Dorian first. These resources can be accessed in the Lesson Materials Section.

FLA-03 Spanish Arpeggios

About this lesson

This lesson plan will help you teach your student how to improvise using the Phrygian-dominant mode and create a Spanish sound. Using very simple arpeggio shapes your student will learn to come up with their own interesting melodies while keeping a rhythm. This is excellent exercise for any student - not just those wanting to learn the Spanish style. The exercises will also give your student practice with fingerpicking.

This lesson plan will help your student:

  • Learn the Phrygian-dominant mode
  • Practice simple arpeggio shapes and patterns
  • Learn how to improvise following a simple set up

Your student doesn't need to understand anything about modes or theory at this point. It does help if they understand the theory behind the mode but even beginners can use this lesson plan without any trouble.

SCA-06 Phrygian Mode

About this lesson

Phrygian is the third of seven modes. It's recommended you teach the modes in order as it will make more sense to your student. After your student understands Ionian and Dorian (see related lessons) you can move on to Phrygian. This is a very exotic sounding mode and students will love it when they can improvise using it. Phrygian is used a lot in Flamenco so any students wanting to get a Spanish sound in their playing can learn this.
