WMO-02 Chords in Dorian Mode

About this worksheet

This worksheet will teach your student how to figure out chords that fit within the Dorian mode. Once your student can easily answer the exercises they will gain a better understanding of the mode and how to apply it. It's recommended you teach the student about the mode first using our guitar lesson plan SCA-05 before giving this worksheet. The exercises will ask the student to figure out the correct diatonic triads and seventh chords within the mode. For example: the diatonic triad built on the third degree of D Dorian is F Major and uses the notes F, A & C. With this level of understanding the student will be able to easily apply the mode in their improvising as they will understand which chords the mode will work with as well as any target tones to work with.

This worksheet will help your student:

  • Understand the Dorian mode
  • Learn to figure out diatonic triads and seventh chords
  • Gain confidence in applying the Dorian mode

Before giving this worksheet to your student, give them WMO-01 which focuses on the Ionian mode.

About this lesson

The Dorian mode is the second of seven modes and has a great sound. Most students will love the sound of Dorian and once they can improvise using this mode, they will start to understand why modes are so important to understand. Make sure your student fully understands the Ionian mode before learning Dorian as it's easier to teach modes starting from Ionian and working through each one.
